Guns N Roses New Sound Still Rocks
The new Guns N Roses release has gotten a lot of attention because it doesn't sound like the old stuff we all knew and loved. Yes, it is a different sound, but I don't think that's a bad thing.
The first album, Appetite for Destruction, set the stage for the sound the band would become known for. As a debut album, it did what it needed to do by blending a little bit of punk, a whisper of glam rock, and a whole lot of loud and brash attitude.
The Illusion albums carried the rock influence and strung it out, making a more epic and sweeping feel. There were still some hard rocking songs, but everything felt bigger, more polished and lost a little bit of its grimy back alley feel. They were still very good, and seemed a natural evolution for the band. Now, after 15 years we get another face slap of rock and roll from Axel. It is a new sound, but it sounds like an updated G n R album.
Axl is the only returning original member and that's just fine because he'd likely make them all nuts anyway. This release is clearly an Axl Rose album, even if the cover says Guns N Roses. He may have miscalculated this one, because if it only had his name on the cover, it may have been received a little better. Die hard fans need to listen to this one a few times through before they make their final determination. The sounds are there. The riffs are there. This is Axl Rose back in fine form.
The first two songs blast us into a frenzy and remind us why we spent our money on it in the first place. The title track Chinese Democracy has been performed dozens of times through the years, but never has been released until now. At the least, this new effort by Axl and Company has been able to open us to new possibilities while reminding us of the reasons why we like them in the first place.
